Full Public Inquiry Must Be Inclusive and Detailed
News Release - September 9, 2010

(Vancouver, BC - September 9, 2010) This afternoon B.C. Attorney-General Mike de Jong announced that there will be a full public inquiry into the police investigation into serial killer Robert Pickton.

“The Union of BC Indian Chiefs is pleased with the announcement for an inquiry into the policing and government failings surrounding the murdered and missing women of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  We share the harsh disappointment of families who disagreed with the B.C. Crown not to proceed with the remaining 20 outstanding murder charges,” said Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs.  “We believe that the terms of reference should be broad and include an examination of the social-economic factors that lead to the marginalization of the much-loved mothers and cherished daughters who fell victim to Pickton.”

Grand Chief Phillip continued “We call for full support of families who may seek full standing in the inquiry.  We call for a detailed examination of police, government and Crown decisions.  We have faith that a respected woman member of the judiciary will oversee the inquiry and that she will seek honesty, accountability, change and reconciliation to honour the loved ones lost.  We hope that this inquiry serves as a catalyst to bring about much-needed fundamental and enduring change within the criminal justice system, social service agencies and policing practices.”
