February, 2010: Olympics News Coverage of Canada's Refusal to Sign UNDRIP

UBCIC releases an open letter to Prime Minister Harper and Premier Campbell regarding the opulence of the Olympic Games occurring in Vancouver in February, urging them to use comparable efforts and spending to take action against disproportionate poverty and violence rates among Indigenous women as a result of intergenerational trauma stemming from past crimes perpetrated by the Canadian government. This comes two weeks after the British Columbia All Chiefs’ Task Force announced its Coordinated Action Working Group’s media awareness campaign, the goal of which was to use international media covering the Olympics to highlight the refusal of Canada to sign UNDRIP. UNDRIP was not endorsed by Canada until the end of 2010, was not fully supported until 2016 and only became ratified into federal law in 2010.
