(Coast Salish Territory / Vancouver, BC) We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Simon Lucas.
On behalf of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, we send our sympathies and condolences to the Lucas family, Hesquiaht and the Nuu-chah-nulth. We fondly remember Dr. Lucas and know he was respected and loved by many.
Without question, Dr. Lucas was truly an iconic leader who helped blaze the path forward to reclaim our Indigenous sovereignty and nationhood. For this we owe his loving family an immeasurable debt of gratitude for lending his time to this hard work.
Although we will no longer be able to enjoy hearing his thunderous eloquence, his many contributions and wisdom will continue to reverberate and be reflected in the many generations to come. Thank you Dr. Lucas.

Goodbye Nuu Chah Nulth’s Voice
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along Nuu Chah Nulth’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch, we’ll always carry
For our Nation’s Golden Child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
