February, 2010: UBCIC and MTTC Hunger Strike against Norwegian Fish Farms in Canada

The Executive of the Union of the UBCIC participates in a 29 hour fast supporting the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk Tribal Council (MTTC)’s opposition to fish farm tenures in the Broughton Archipelago. The MTTC and UBCIC release an open letter to King Herald V of Norway, with hopes of discussing the harmful impact of Norwegian Fish Farm Companies in Canada and how they are actively disrespecting and disregarding UNDRIP principles (which Norway signed in 2007). Norway never met with the MTTC or UBCIC, but the fast and publicized open letter raised significant awareness about fish farms and Indigenous land stewardship and is said to have contributed significantly to protests against Norwegian fish farms, including those in Chile in 2019.
