The Supreme Court of Canada releases its decision on MiningWatch Canada V. Canada, ruling that in the case of the Red Chris Mine in Northern BC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada was required to do a comprehensive environmental assessment; the “screening” they had done was insufficient and their reinterpretation of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act was flawed. UBCIC announces its support of the ruling and its solidarity with the Tahltan First Nation, whose lands the Red Chris Mine is on. UBCIC hopes that future projects in BC receive the same level of scrutiny regarding their environmental impacts, under the guidance of local First Nations.
