UBCIC Statement on the Passing of Chief Roger Adolph
(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C. – November 4, 2022) The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) offers our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Adolph family and the people of St’at’imc Xaxli’p for the loss of Timicwus; Roger Adolph, prominent leader, former chief, and champion boxer. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and all those who had the privilege to stand alongside him as he fought for Indigenous rights.

Every Child Matters: FNLC calls on Canada to reengage with negotiating parties in light of the CHRT’s decision regarding the Final Settlement Agreement
(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C.)
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has released its decision regarding the Final Settlement Agreement (“FSA”) regarding compensation for the victim/survivor class members of the child welfare system. There were two key aspects of the CHRT’s decision, one is confirmation that not all classes of victims/survivors are covered by the FSA. In addition, the CHRT found that the FSA did not fully satisfy the Tribunal’s orders because categories of victims/survivors had been removed.

((xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C. – October 4, 2022) On October 4th, 2022, Sisters in Spirit Vigils are being held across British Columbia to not only honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People and their families, but to demand immediate action for safety and justice for Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People. The first Sisters in Spirit Vigil was held in 2006 by the Native Women’s Association of Canada.

Battered Women’s Support Services, Feminists Deliver, Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, Options for Sexual Health, Women Transforming Cities, Prince George Sexual Assault Centre, Hogan’s Alley Society and Union of BC Indian Chiefs condemn the many, overlapping failed systems that resulted in violence against this vulnerable mother.

(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C.) On the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), the First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) is deeply concerned that the Province of British Columbia has so far failed to designate September 30th a statutory holiday marking the profound horrors of residential schools, and the enduring needs for healing and honour of survivors, commemoration and widespread public education.
