UBCIC Condemns RCMP Intimidation of Wet’suwet’en

Land Defenders

(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver, B.C. – January 6, 2018) The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) is gravely concerned about the safety and well-being of the Wet’suwet’en land defenders as the RCMP set up nearby the Gidimt’en camp to enforce the interim injunction from the BC Supreme Court in December 2018, which supports Coastal Gaslink beginning construction on a 700km natural gas pipeline and transformation plant.

December 8, 2018, Montreal—As the COP24 climate conference got underway in Poland, Indigenous leaders from British Columbia and Quebec were united front and centre today at the ten-thousand-person climate rally in Montreal, where opposition to the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline is the strongest in the country (Report here). The Indigenous leaders delivered a message of solidarity.

 UBCIC Condemns Minister Bennett’s False Statements Regarding the “Joint Development” of a New Specific Claims Process

The Union of BC Indian Chiefs unequivocally denounces the inaccurate and misleading statements made by Minister Carolyn Bennett to the national media and to the chiefs gathered at a meeting of the Assembly of First Nations. Minister Bennett has falsely stated that the specific claims process is being “overhauled” in favour of a new regime that has been jointly developed by First Nations.
