(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver, B.C. – October 20, 2015) The 2015 Federal Election resulted in a Liberal majority government with 70% of the registered electors in British Columbia electing 17 Liberal, 14 NDP, 10 Conservative and 1 Green Party representatives.

While not all parties have responded to the questions posed by the BC First Nations Leadership Council, all federal parties have made various commitments to First Nations. A quick summary of Party commitments to this point in the campaign that may be relevant to First Nation communities can be found in the chart below. (Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver, B.C. – October 7, 2015) The NDP released a strong commitment to Indigenous communities today, calling for a new era that embraces a Nation to Nation relationship.  The NDP have 22 Indigenous candidates running in the federal election, the most Indigenous candidates of any single federal party ever.

(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver, B.C. – August 27, 2015) The Indigenous Unist’ot’en Clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation in northwestern BC are on high alert about a likely impending large scale RCMP mass arrest operation on their territory. The RCMP have made a number of visits to the Unist’ot’en as well as other First Nations leadership regarding the Unist’ot’en community’s active exercise of their Aboriginal Title and Rights to protect their lands from oil and gas development.

Indigenous peoples and human rights groups say that a new United Nations report on Canada’s human rights record should be a wake-up call for all Canadians.
