UBCIC releases a letter of support for the Secwepemc Neskonlith Indian Band and Adam’s Lake Indian Band’s efforts in rejecting the proposed incorporation of Sun Peaks Resort as a municipality. UBCIC has been working with Chief Wilson and Chief Leon of both bands since 2007 in their efforts to gain meaningful representation on their lands as the local ski hill has been developed into a massive four-season, high-density resort. Secwepemc people have been unable to exercise their right of consultation as stated in section 35 of the federal Constitution Act, nor their rights as Indigenous people on unceded territory, since Sun Peaks’ expansion began in 1993.
