Chiefs Council February 2021

UBCIC CHIEFS COUNCIL (VIRTUAL)
FOURTH NOTICE AND UPDATED DRAFT AGENDA

February 17th, 2021

Dear Chiefs Council, sister organizations, and friends:

We are very pleased to let you know that UBCIC President Grand Chief Stewart Phillip had a successful kidney transplant operation with his new kidney generously donated by his daughter Lori, and they are both recovering well. Grand Chief Phillip, Joan Phillip, Lori Phillip and their whole family extend sincere gratitude to everyone for keeping them in your prayers.

The next UBCIC Chiefs Council will take place February 24th- February 25th, 2021, from 9am to 4pm via Zoom.  Please register as soon as possible, and if you are sending a proxy, a template letter is attached. Please send in your proxy letter in advance of the Chiefs Council meeting to ensure your proxy is processed in advance of the meeting. All meeting information can be found on our Chiefs Council Meeting website. An updated draft agenda (V2) is attached.

At the 52nd AGA, the Chiefs Council reviewed and provided feedback into a UBCIC position paper on hunting. A final version is attached for your review and will be discussed by Chief Keith Crow and Louise Mandell during the upcoming meeting. Also attached is a new UBCIC paper on the impacts of drivers licensing on First Nations in BC, prepared by Lucy Sager, All Nations Driving School, who will provide an overview during the upcoming meeting. Resolutions are in process to advance the key outcomes of both papers.

REGISTRATION

Pre-registrationEveryone must pre-register for the UBCIC Chiefs Council Zoom meeting. Pre-registration is required to receive the unique Zoom meeting link. Registration helps staff track meeting delegates (chiefs, proxies, representatives), speakers and observers.

Please PRE-REGISTER here as soon as possible and no later than 4:00 pm on February 22, 2021 to receive your meeting link.  Be sure to use an email address that you can access as needed.

Registration Confirmation:  Once you have submitted the online registration form, you will receive an email indicating that your registration has been confirmed.  If you have indicated that your community is not currently in good standing (membership dues owing), please contact Tracy Point ([email protected]) to arrange for payment. Per the UBCIC Constitution and Bylaws, only members in good standing in the current fiscal year (April 1st 2020 to March 31st 2021) may speak from the floor or vote on resolutions brought forward during the meeting.

Zoom meeting link:  Only those who register in advance for the UBCIC Chiefs Council meeting will receive their unique Zoom meeting link via email.  This will be sent at approximately 1pm on February 23, 2021. Please retain the email with the link as it will be required to join the meeting.

Registration Support:  Please direct any registration questions or concerns to Angie Bain, Registration Lead ([email protected]).

NOMINATIONS: FNLC POLITICAL STEERING COMMITTEE ON WILD SALMON

Nominations are being sought for one (1) UBCIC political representative to the FNLC Political Steering Committee on Wild Salmon.  Because we did not receive any applicants by the deadline of February 10th, nominations will be sought from the floor at the upcoming Chiefs Council meeting.

UNCEDED CHIEFS SCREENING

Join us for the UBCIC members-only virtual screening of Doreen Manuel’s award-winning film Unceded Chiefs on February 24th at 7:00 pm. The same unique link you use to join the meeting during the day can be used to access the screening. Unceded Chiefs traces the historic early activism of BC First Nations leaders who in the late 1960’s unified in a battle against the Canadian government to reject Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s proposed 1969 White Paper Policy.

MEETING LOGISTICS, RESOLUTIONS AND MATERIALS

Meeting materials including draft resolutions will be available in advance for download from our website, rather than provided in hard copy. We are pleased to inform you that travel and accommodation expenses to the nearest location possible may be provided for UBCIC Chiefs or Chiefs’ proxy if they do not have the required bandwidth or Wi-Fi infrastructure required to connect remotely from your home/community.  Please contact Mildred Chartrand ([email protected]) if you wish to do so, and require assistance booking a hotel. Alternately, you will be able to participate by phone.

Wishing everyone safety and health in these challenging times.

Respectfully,

Andrea Glickman

Policy Director
