UBCIC CHIEFS COUNCIL (VIRTUAL): FOCUS ON KIRS

FINAL NOTICE, SPECIAL GUESTS, RESOLUTIONS

June 29, 2021

Dear Chiefs Council, sister organizations, and friends:

The next UBCIC Chiefs Council will take place virtually tomorrow, June 30th, 2021 from 9am to 1pm. The meeting is being planned with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc to focus on actions around the remains of the 215 children found buried at the Kamloops Indian Residential School (KIRS), and to discuss the overarching issue of missing and unidentified children from Indian Residential Schools that impacts all First Nations in BC and across Turtle Island. A virtual breakout room with a counsellor will be available during the duration of the meeting for anyone needing support.

We are pleased to confirm special guests including the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Francisco Cali Tzay, Hon. Murray Sinclair, Andrea Carmen (ED of International Indian Treaty Council), Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Hon. David Lametti (MOJAG), Hon. Murray Rankin (MIRR), and Hon David Eby (JAG).

Per the UBCIC Constitution and Bylaws, only members in good standing in the current fiscal year (April 1st 2021 to March 31st 2022) may speak from the floor or vote on resolutions brought forward during the meeting. A membership letter for the current fiscal year is attached. Please contact Tracy Point ([email protected] or 1-604-831-4265) to renew or check the status of your membership.

None of the registrations or proxies from the cancelled June 2-3 meeting are valid for the June 30th meeting- you will need to register again and send in a new proxy letter (template attached).  All meeting info can be found on our Chiefs Council Meeting Event Page.

MEETING LOGISTICS, RESOLUTIONS AND MATERIALS

An updated draft agenda (V3) is attached for your review.
