Canada’s Delays in Implementing Calls for Justice Costing Lives – UBCIC Advocates for Federal MMIWG2S+ Legislation

(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh)/ Vancouver, B.C. – June 30, 2023) Today marks four years since the conclusion of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+). Of the 231 Calls for Justice (CFJ), over half have not been started, and only two have been implemented (see CBC Report Card). UBCIC calls for federal legislation to compel Canada to take urgent action to end the MMIWG2S+ crisis.

The First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) is deeply disturbed by the findings reported in the Representative for Children and Youth’s (RCY) most recent publication entitled, The Right to Thrive: An Urgent Call to Recognize, Respect and Nurture Two Spirit, Trans, Non-Binary and other Gender Diverse Children and Youth (The Right to Thrive), which illuminates significant human rights violations, experienced by Two Spirit, Trans, Non-Binary and other Gender Diverse (2STNBGD) children and youth, as a result of antiquated, disinformed, discriminative, and deficient system of supports.

(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)/Vancouver, B.C.) – The First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) is deeply aggrieved at Hon. Mitzi Dean’s inadequate approach and ongoing lack of accountability in response to the horrific abuse of two First Nations children in foster care. The FNLC is calling for Minister Dean to resign immediately, and for the Province to work with First Nations to eradicate the mistreatment of First Nations children in care, including supporting First Nations' jurisdiction of First Nations children.

(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil Waututh)/ Vancouver, B.C. – June 21, 2023) As we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) also recognizes the summer solstice as a day of change and a time for renewal and focus. Today we are also welcoming Canada’s National Action Plan on the federal implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration), and we call for urgent action to be taken by Canada to implement the UN Declaration into Canadian law and policy.

Chiefs of Ontario and First Nations in what is now known as Ontario have rejected the Government of Canada’s proposed Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Self-Government Recognition and Implementation legislation, expressing serious and legitimate concerns about the impact the legislation may have on the exercise of their inherent and constitutionally protected rights, as well as concerns regarding the legitimacy of certain communities the MNO claims to represent.

The UBCIC Chiefs Council has unanimously passed Resolution 2023-39, denouncing Métis colonialism in what is now known as British Columbia (BC), and rejecting the false, unfounded, and deeply offensive assertions of the Métis that the Métis hold independent land and water-based inherent and constitutionally protected rights in BC, including related jurisdiction.
